TBEX Manila, Philippines 2016

I Popped my TBEX Cherry & it Felt so Good! (Plus Tips for Newbies)

Each year, TBEX is held in a host country in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific regions, bringing the travel industry’s most creative minds together to learn, network, and do business.

What is TBEX? I asked myself after stumbling upon it over a Google search for best practices in blogging. I was the curious cat, looking at its website and after discovering more and more details about the event, it turns out that the largest gathering of travel bloggers in this planet is happening in a week! And for the first time ever, it will be held in Manila, the Philippines, my hometown! Meaning I don’t need to buy plane tickets just to get to the event!

All i know is that the awesomest creatures in this planet are attending and I should be there, too. Continue reading

The Awesome Benefits of a Google Local Guide

Google Maps has long been the go to site for travelers looking for useful information and tips on their destination. This has been a big project by Google that required thousands of resources to add information on local establishments and attractions, travel tips, and local photos that allowed everyone to plan a nearing trip. Just search for a local business or restaurant on Google Maps, and voila! It will provide a handful of information, including addresses, store hours, tips and reviews, and even photos. However there would come a time when Google would need additional help in keeping the information updated. They can’t have a Googler constantly checking out each locality just to update the information of the constant changes in the businesses and restaurants in one place, right? And with the competition only getting stiffer with Yelp, Apply Maps and Tripadvisor having thousands of members actively giving out reviews, the battle for relevant information is on.

This is when they finally turned to crowdsourcing – this time, Google needs our help as “Local Guides”, specializing in the places we live in. This is in keeping up with their ultimate goal which is to organize the world’s information, and keep that information constantly updated. And yes, they’re willing to give out handsome benefits to its Local Guides who are active contributors. It is a win-win situation, if you are a review junkie and are interested in joining meet-ups, that is. Continue reading

What does customs want from our balikbayan box?

What does Customs Want from our Balikbayan Box?

Just last week, ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol reported a story of a returning Filipino resident from the US, who was deemed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to have abused his privilege of bringing home gifts to his family by bringing home an insane amount of luxury goods. The man was then released upon payment of taxes (up to PHP 85,000 / USD $1,800) which were imposed on his ‘goods’.  This prompted the Bureau of Customs to release a statement Continue reading

Visa-Free World, A Better World?

I was at it again, can’t help myself but look at the passports of the other passengers in line at the immigration counter. Who is from what country? What passport are they holding? Who can travel the world at a moment’s notice without even spending effort, time, and money (not to mention stress when gathering required documents) on a Visa? Them. Who is envious? Me.

It was about the last quarter of the trip to US when the flight attendants asked where I was from. I proudly said, ‘The Philippines’. Then they gave me a form and an embarkation card to be filled out and given to the immigration officer upon arrival to San Francisco. The attendant gave the other passengers their forms as well. There I was again. Like a spy, I again couldn’t help myself from peeping at the passports of the other passengers who are already filling out their forms. Who is from what country? What passport are they holding? Who can travel the world at a moment’s notice without even spending effort, time, and money (not to mention stress when gathering required documents) on a Visa? Them. Who is envious? Me. Continue reading
